The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The former head of state was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
He was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
