Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled some conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Muted
However, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
