Our Premier Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Place.

On the surface, Lux might appear more like a difficult scholarly challenge rather than the latest pop album by a musician whose previous hit featured a global pop star. Broken into 4 separate parts and performed in thirteen tongues, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged opus investigating feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, often through the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic treated with raw honesty elsewhere—is shot heavenward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within an extensive list of contributors. The pure audacity alone makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem rather small.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to avoid overly academic posturing feels nearly a miracle, and sole praise going to the artist. While it's not her first album to blend historical sounds with modern styles, its ambitions feel much higher here, and the balancing act more precarious. The element that truly elevates this fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Similar to the iconic artist at her height, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking your heart in two, you nevertheless desire to stay right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That exuberant energy comes forth brightly on a stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, and we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment before a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds in like cartoonish force. The song then shifts into the frenetic single driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic with Lux is that the listener rarely quite know—nor wish to predict—where you is going to next."

Nearly each track concludes at a completely different point from how it began. A track explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight symphony before collapsing into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her previous rhythmic work starts out moody and brooding, featuring menacing vocals, until sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

A key achievement on the album is navigating the line between radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is little coincidence that it has become her first release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly catchy hits. A song sung entirely in the English language swells on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging melodies as it spins skyward. That trick is repeated on a different powerful track that expands and contracts, intertwining layered melodies like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the singing have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album is popular music on a grand scale, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its own built-in excess. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that takes time to completely explore but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record offers a sumptuous feast at which the characters around the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flutter from conversations about ancient figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
