Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
